Prices Soared 10 times in May
From May 4, petrol and diesel prices were increased for 4 consecutive days, while the prices of petrol and diesel had remained peaceful for the first 18 days due to elections. Petrol and diesel have become costlier 10 times in May. Petrol rates have increased by Rs 2.45 in Delhi so far in May, while diesel has become expensive by Rs 2.78 this month.
Petrol and Diesel Became cheaper in March, April
Earlier, the common people got some relief from expensive petrol and diesel on April 15. Petrol and diesel prices were cut three times in April and in the month of March. Before April 15, the last change in the prices of petrol and diesel took place on 30 March 2021. Then petrol in Delhi was cheaper by 22 paise and diesel by 23 paise. Petrol became 61 paise cheaper in March and diesel prices were reduced by 60 paise. The biggest reason for the 3 times cut in petrol diesel prices in March was the weakness of crude oil in the global market.
Petrol and Diesel became Expensive in May
Petrol is being sold in Delhi today at Rs 92.85 per liter. In other cities like Mumbai petrol is Rs 99.14, in Kolkata petrol is Rs 92.92. And in Chennai, petrol is being sold at Rs 94.54.

Petrol and diesel have become expensive 10 times in May. Earlier in February, the rate of petrol and diesel was increased 16 times. Earlier in January, rates were increased 10 times. During this time, the price of petrol was increased by Rs 2.59 and diesel by Rs 2.61. So far in the year 2021, the price of oil has been increased by 36 days. During this time petrol has become expensive by Rs 9.14 per liter. On January 1, the price of petrol was Rs 83.71, today it is Rs 92.85 per liter. Similarly, diesel has become costlier by Rs 9.64 per liter in Delhi from January 1 to today. On January 1, the price of diesel in Delhi was Rs 73.87 per liter, today it is Rs 83.51.
Petrol Became costlier by Rs 21 in 1 year
If comparing today’s prices with the prices of the year before, then on 19 May 2020, the rate of petrol in Delhi was Rs 71.26 per liter, that is, petrol has become expensive by Rs 21.59 per liter in the year. Diesel was also Rs 69.39 per liter on 19 May 2020, which means diesel has also become costlier by Rs 14.12 per liter in a year.

In the price of petrol, 60 percent is the share of central excise and state tax, while in diesel it is 54 percent. Central excise duty on petrol is Rs 32.90 per liter, while on diesel it is Rs 31.80 per liter.
