The Green Knight Movie Review
Gawain (Dev Patel) is the nephew of the legendary King Arthur (Sean Harris). The film begins when Gawain, after getting drunk one night, is met at a brothel by her boyfriend, Essel (Alicia Vikander). When he returns to Camelot, his mother Morgan Le Fay (Saritha Choudhury) scolds him for his behaviour. When Gawain attends a lavish feast hosted by his uncle for Christmas, a mysterious Green Knight (Ralph Inson) challenges the king’s court to a game. If there is a knight who can strike him, he will win his axe. But in return, that knight would receive a similar blow a year later. Seeing an opportunity to prove himself, Gawain rises to the challenge and immediately beheads the Green Knight. The puzzler simply raises his head, and leaves after reminding Gawain of the promise. Gawain sets out on a journey to make ends meet.
The film features some of the most beautiful and different frames ever seen on screen, along with an eye-catching production design. There is no weak link in the cast. Gawain is most relatable because of Dev Patel’s outstanding performance in the film. Despite his reluctance to dislike Gawain because of his qualities, his desire to earn his inheritance is admirable. Patel has imbued him with a human quality that keeps us invested in his entire journey. This slow-burn imagery is exceptionally gorgeous with memorable imagery. Perhaps brave souls will return to this world to make more sense, and perhaps that’s the challenge ‘The Green Knight’ intends.
